Hatnub, Archaeological site in Eastern Desert, Egypt
The Hatnub quarries contain expansive stone extraction areas, including a central pit measuring 55 meters by 85 meters in the desert landscape.
The site remained active from the reign of Khufu through the Roman period, spanning approximately from 2589 BC to 300 AD.
Ancient inscriptions and hieroglyphic texts found throughout the quarry document the relationships between regional leaders and pharaohs during different dynasties.
The site features a complex network of stone pathways, causeways, and drystone structures that facilitated the transportation of extracted alabaster blocks.
A preserved ancient ramp system with wooden post holes demonstrates the engineering methods used to move heavy stone blocks up steep inclines.
