Hatnub

Hatnub is an alabaster quarry in the Eastern Desert where workers extracted large blocks of stone from the ground. The main pit spans approximately 55 by 85 meters and still shows the marks of heavy labor.

The quarry operated for many centuries, from the time of Pharaoh Khufu until the Roman period. During this long span, workers supplied Egypt with the valued stone.

Inscriptions carved into the quarry walls reveal how regional leaders communicated with pharaohs and displayed their authority. These texts provide insight into the political relationships of the time.

The site lies far into the desert and requires good planning and sturdy equipment to visit. It is important to bring plenty of water and not to underestimate the heat.

An ancient ramp system with wooden post holes shows how workers moved heavy stone blocks up steep slopes. This engineering reveals that Egyptians used advanced techniques to transport massive loads.
