Saint Mark's Coptic Orthodox Cathedral

Saint Mark's Cathedral is a large Coptic Orthodox church in Alexandria. The building uses reinforced concrete with Coptic design elements and religious imagery on walls and facades.

The current church was built in the 20th century on a site linked to the first Christian community in Egypt. Saint Mark is said to have preached here in the first century AD, before Alexandria became a major center of early Christianity.

The church takes its name from the Evangelist Mark, considered the founder of Christianity in Egypt, whose relics rest here. Worshippers come to pray and attend liturgical ceremonies that can last several hours.

Visits are possible on most days except during prayer times. Shoulders and knees must be covered, and respectful behavior is expected during services.

The building serves as the official residence of the Coptic Orthodox Pope. Inside, old relics and liturgical objects offer insight into the traditions of early Christians in Egypt.
