Rabaa Al-Adawiya Mosque

Rabaa Al-Adawiya Mosque occupies a prominent corner in Nasr City where Autostrad Road meets El Tayaran Street, with its white minarets rising above the surrounding buildings. The complex includes a prayer hall, a conference center, and a medical facility that opened in 1997 to serve local residents.

This location gained worldwide attention in August 2013 when demonstrators gathered here to protest the ousting of the elected president. Security forces cleared the square in a violent confrontation that became one of the most tragic episodes in recent Egyptian history.

Named after the eighth-century Sufi ascetic, this place of worship now fits into the daily routines of families throughout the neighborhood. Worshippers gather here for the five daily prayers and use its rooms for religious instruction.

The site sits close to the eastern cemeteries of Cairo and can be reached via major traffic routes through the city. Visitors should dress modestly and respect prayer times if they plan to enter the grounds.

The administration relies on around 300 volunteer members who coordinate charity projects and oversee development programs across different Cairo neighborhoods. This volunteer structure allows the community to organize social initiatives beyond its own district.
