Unknown Soldier Memorial, Military memorial in Nasr City, Egypt
The Unknown Soldier Memorial is a hollow pyramid structure standing about 33 meters tall with four pillars at its base. The geometric form houses an interior space where visitors can view the burial chamber and architectural details.
The memorial was built in 1974 under President Anwar Sadat to honor Egyptian and Arab soldiers who died in the October War of 1973. Following Sadat's assassination in 1981, he was buried within the very monument he had commissioned.
The memorial displays 71 symbolic names carved in Kufic script across basalt stones, honoring soldiers from all parts of Egypt. Walking around the monument, visitors can read these inscriptions and connect with the diversity of those being remembered.
The memorial is open daily for visitors who can explore the interior spaces and view the inscribed stones. It is best to visit in early morning hours when fewer visitors are present and the light illuminates the architectural details clearly.
The monument houses the burial site of President Anwar Sadat, the very leader who commissioned its construction. This ironic detail adds a singular layer of personal history to a place built for national remembrance.
