Nasr City, Residential district in Cairo, Egypt
Nasr City is a residential district east of central Cairo with multi-story concrete buildings arranged along straight streets. The area stretches across a wide zone with broad boulevards and many apartment blocks.
The neighborhood emerged during the 1960s as part of urban expansion under President Gamal Abdel Nasser. Architect Sayed Karim designed the modern street grid with the goal of creating new residential space outside the old center.
The area connects international shops with local markets where vendors sell fresh fruit and spices alongside modern shopping centers. Street cafés along main roads fill in the evening with residents drinking tea and playing backgammon.
Buses connect the area with the city center and run regularly along main roads. Shopping centers usually open late in the morning and close after dark.
The Unknown Soldier Memorial honors fallen fighters from the October War of 1973 and takes the form of a pyramid. The geometric structure stands out clearly from surrounding residential buildings.
