Shatby Necropolis, Ancient burial complex in Shatby district, Alexandria, Egypt.

Shatby Necropolis is a rock-cut burial complex with multiple underground chambers located near the Mediterranean coast in Alexandria. The chamber walls display Greek architectural forms including Ionic and Doric elements, with rectangular niches carved into the stone to hold urns and ash containers.

The necropolis dates from the late 4th to 3rd century BC as a burial ground for early settlers from Macedonia, Thessaly, and Asia Minor who had established themselves in Alexandria. This period saw the expansion of burial sites to accommodate the growing Greek population under Ptolemaic rule.

The burial chambers blend Greek traditions with local burial practices, where the wall niches reflected the status of those interred. Today visitors can still read the names of the deceased inscribed above the chamber entrances, creating a personal connection to this ancient community.

After recent restoration, the underground chambers are open to visitors and are best explored through guided tours of the archaeological site. Wear comfortable shoes and prepare for uneven terrain and confined spaces, as you will navigate narrow corridors and descend steep steps.

Within the necropolis are two rock-cut funerary couches that served as containers for urns and depicted banquet scenes, an unusual feature of this burial complex. These stone furnishings reveal how the deceased were believed to continue feasting in the afterlife, a religious conviction made visible through architectural detail.
