Talaiot de l'Illot, Archaeological site in Sant Llorenç des Cardassar, Spain.
The Talaiot de l'Illot is a prehistoric settlement centered on a thick square tower surrounded by numerous residential structures. The complex includes storage areas, work spaces, and domestic quarters all contained within protective stone walls.
The settlement was established around 850 BC and occupied until approximately 123 BC when Roman forces conquered Mallorca. This timespan represents the entire talaiotic period on the island.
The layout demonstrates how residents organized themselves and shared daily tasks within their community. The positioning of buildings reveals patterns of social order and collective life in this ancient settlement.
You can walk through the site freely while information boards describe the different areas and structures. Wear sturdy shoes as the ground is uneven and there is limited shade from the sun.
The massive stones of the central tower were positioned to maintain clear lines of sight across the entire settlement. This arrangement suggests residents valued visual control over their community and the surrounding landscape.
