Plaza de toros de la Maestranza, Baroque bullring in El Arenal district, Seville, Spain
Plaza de toros de la Maestranza is a bullring beside the Guadalquivir River with curved walls and a two-tiered arcade structure facing the waterfront. Rows of stepped seating rise around the sandy oval floor, surrounded by whitewashed perimeter walls that blend with the cityscape.
Construction started during the 18th century and continued across several generations until the ring reached completion in the mid-19th century. Final work closed the oval and gave the arena its present form near the riverbank.
The archway entrance displays coats of arms from the Real Maestranza brotherhood that commissioned the construction during the 18th century. Statues of celebrated matadors line the inner courtyard, recognizing those who performed here across different generations.
The entrance sits near the river and is within walking distance from the center of Seville. Visitors can explore the inner passages and small museum at their own pace during a guided tour.
The Principes gate was traditionally reserved for royalty and honored guests, positioned directly above the main entrance. Wooden beams beneath the stands carry carvings and marks left from past centuries.
