Castillo de Nogalte

Castillo de Nogalte is a fortress on a hill in the Sierra de La Torrecilla, featuring seven towers with some reaching several meters in height and incorporating double-angled passages throughout its structure. The complex combines military defensive elements with residential cave spaces integrated into the hillside.

This fortress was built between the 12th and 13th centuries to control important trade routes connecting the Levante and Andalusia regions. It served as a crucial defensive position in the medieval communication networks of the area.

The castle reflects how communities adapted to this mountainous terrain through both fortification and residential structures. The cave dwellings reveal practical solutions for living in this landscape.

The site is best explored on foot, and sturdy footwear is advisable since the terrain is hilly and uneven in places. Guided tours provide the best way to understand the different areas and their original purposes.

The fortress follows a distinctive Al-Andalus design with two separate enclosures linked by an angled gateway. This architectural approach was typical of medieval Islamic fortifications in the region.
