Somorrostro, Former shanty town in La Barceloneta, Spain.
Somorrostro was an informal settlement along the Mediterranean coast between two major streets in La Barceloneta, stretching for about 500 meters. The area was later transformed into a beach section that received official recognition and naming in 2010.
The settlement began in the late 1800s and grew into a community of about 15,000 people living in makeshift housing. It was demolished in 1966 under Franco's regime.
The flamenco dancer Carmen Amaya spent her childhood in this neighborhood. The place later attracted filmmakers who shot scenes here for their stories.
The site is accessible today as a beach area along the waterfront with few physical remains from its earlier form. Visitors can explore the coastline and discover the surrounding La Barceloneta neighborhood and nearby areas.
Residents built their homes from found materials like stones, metal sheets, and wood, without basic utilities such as water or electricity. These self-built structures showed how the community managed to survive and sustain itself under harsh conditions.
