Celemín Reservoir, body of water
Celemín Reservoir is a water storage facility in Cádiz Province created in 1972 to control the Celemín river flow. The earthen dam rises about 34 meters high and spans approximately 430 meters at its crest, holding water across roughly 500 hectares of land.
The dam was built in 1972 to manage water supply for the region and support farming. It partly replaces the former Laguna de La Janda lake, whose waters had been drained away.
The reservoir takes its name from the Celemín river that flows into it. Today, locals and visitors see the place as a quiet spot where human needs and nature coexist, used mainly for recreation and observing wildlife.
The reservoir is easily accessible by car via road. The surrounding area is vegetated with trees and shrubs, so sturdy footwear and sun protection are advisable for a comfortable visit.
Notably, the main dam works alongside a secondary structure called Dique del Collado, which together stabilize the water system. This dual-structure approach shows thoughtful engineering to secure the reservoir in a protected natural area.
