Foro romano de Clunia Sulpicia

Foro romano de Clunia Sulpicia

The Foro romano de Clunia Sulpicia is a Roman forum on a hilltop in Burgos Province covering roughly 160 by 115 meters, with buildings arranged for religious, commercial, and administrative purposes. A temple stands on a raised platform at the south end, a three-aisled basilica anchors the north, and shops line the sides under protective colonnades.

The forum was built mainly in the 1st century as the city of Clunia reached its height. By the late 3rd century, the site began to decline, and by the 4th century decorations had been stripped away, marking the gradual abandonment of this once-vital center.

The forum served as the hub for religious, commercial, and political life, reflecting how Roman society organized itself. The arrangement of buildings, from temples to shops, shows how people mixed worship, trade, and governance in one shared space.

The site is accessible for walking, with remains spread across the terrain allowing you to trace the outlines of different buildings. Wear sturdy shoes and allow adequate time to wander through all areas, as the ruins extend across a considerable space.

A Roman governor named Servius Sulpicius Galba received word of his appointment as emperor while at this location, an event that underscores the importance of this place in Roman history. News of such rank traveled to this remote corner of the empire, revealing how far communications reached in the ancient world.
