Igrexa de San Francisco de Betanzos

The Igrexa de San Francisco is a medieval stone church near the center of Betanzos with pointed arches and Gothic details. The building contains several burial monuments for regional noble families, including elaborately carved stone sarcophagi.

The church was built in 1387 by order of Count Fernán Pérez de Andrade and was one of the most important religious structures of medieval Galicia. It was constructed during a period when local noble families were consolidating their power in the region.

The church was a place where local nobility displayed power and remembered their ancestors through stone tombs and heraldry. These burial monuments still tell visitors about the importance of the families who ruled the region.

The main entrance is located on Rúa San Francisco and the church opens during morning and afternoon hours. The best time to visit is outside of religious services so you can explore the interior without interruption.

Stone sculptures of wild animals including a boar and a bear sit at the base of the building and were the personal emblems of its founder. This unusual decoration shows how nobility wove their identity directly into the building's design.
