Castellar Zoo, Wildlife sanctuary in Castellar de la Frontera, Spain
Castellar Zoo is a wildlife facility in Castellar de la Frontera, in southern Andalusia, where animals live in open enclosures designed to resemble natural habitats. The grounds are divided into several sections, each housing different species that visitors can watch at close range.
The facility began as a rehabilitation center for wild animals that were injured or orphaned and could not be released back into nature. It gradually grew into a permanent home for animals that need ongoing human care to survive.
Visitors can watch keepers working directly with the animals during daily routines, which gives a clear sense of how rescued wildlife is cared for. Many of the animals living here were once injured or orphaned and have grown accustomed to human presence over time.
The grounds are easy to walk through, with clear paths connecting the different sections of the facility. Plan to spend a few hours to move through all areas comfortably, and wear shoes suited for outdoor terrain.
Some animals in the zoo are calm enough to be approached by visitors under staff supervision, which is unusual for a zoo setting. This is partly because many of them were hand-raised by keepers from a very young age after arriving as orphans.
