Awash National Park, National park in Afar Region, Ethiopia
The 756-square-kilometer area contains grasslands, volcanic plains, hot springs, and the Awash River flowing through multiple ecological zones.
The Ethiopian government established this conservation area in 1969 as the country's first national park to protect local wildlife populations.
The Afar people maintain traditional pastoralist lifestyles near the park boundaries, herding cattle and practicing customs passed through generations.
Visitors can access the park via a 225-kilometer drive east of Addis Ababa, with accommodations ranging from camping sites to permanent lodges.
The park houses over 450 bird species and diverse mammals including East African Oryx, while the Awash Falls create a natural boundary.
