Mount Zuqualla, Dormant volcano in Misraq Shewa Zone, Ethiopia.
Mount Zuqualla is a dormant volcano with a crater lake at its summit. The crater holds a lake about 1 kilometer across, surrounded by marshland and forest that has grown over the volcanic slopes.
The mountain appeared on historical maps from the 15th century, marking its place in geography for centuries. Monks later established monasteries on its slopes, building the religious communities that remain there today.
The mountain is a sacred site with two monasteries: St. Gebre Menfas and Kidane Mihret. Pilgrims and visitors come here to experience the spiritual quality of these religious communities and to walk through the grounds where monks have lived for centuries.
The hike starts from Debre Zeit and follows a steep trail to the summit, taking several hours to complete. Start early in the day and bring water and sturdy footwear for the climb.
The crater lake is home to uncommon animals like Colobus Monkeys and the endemic Wattled Ibis. This wildlife on the mountaintop draws those interested in seeing animals found nowhere else.
