Tigray Province, Administrative region in northern Ethiopia
Tigray stretches across 50,079 square kilometers of diverse terrain, including high plateaus between 1,500 and 3,300 meters and the eastern Denakil Plain.
The region formed the core of the ancient Aksumite kingdom, with the city of Aksum serving as the capital from 100 to 940 CE.
The population of 5.4 million includes Tigrayan, Irob, and Kunama peoples, with Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity practiced by 96 percent of residents.
Agriculture dominates the regional economy through cereals, legumes, coffee cultivation, and livestock raising, supporting 80 percent of the population.
The Tekeze and Gash rivers flow through the territory, reaching the Kobar Sink, which sits 116 meters below sea level.
