Tenhola hillfort, Iron Age hillfort in Hattula, Finland

Tenhola hillfort stands on a sand dune rising about 65 meters above Vanajavesi lake, with stone ramparts clearly visible at its summit. The site has multiple layers of structures, with dwelling remains in lower areas and fortification elements in higher positions.

The fortification was built between roughly 500 and 1000 AD as a defensive structure against outside threats. Later, in the Middle Ages, the location was used again for military purposes, as shown by archaeological finds including a cannonball.

The site shows how early settlers built their homes on elevated spots and protected them with stone walls. The visible foundations and reconstructed wooden fences give a sense of how people organized their community here.

The site is accessible via Suontaantiet and Merventiet roads, with a designated campfire area at the base. When visiting, wear sturdy shoes and take care on the steep slopes.

Excavations at this location uncovered a medieval cannonball, revealing that the site remained militarily important long after its initial use. This find connects two completely different time periods at the same place.
