Heideken, Office building in central Turku, Finland.
Heideken is a stone office building in central Turku designed by architect Gustaf Nyström and located at Käsityöläiskatu 10. Today it houses employment services and other social organizations that provide guidance and resources to visitors.
Carl von Heideken established the building in the 1890s as a maternity facility for the city. A fire destroyed the original wooden structure in 1898, leading to the construction of the current stone building that opened in 1900 and was expanded in 1928.
The building was originally designed to serve mothers and families, and it maintained this connection to welfare services when its purpose changed. Today the social agencies working here still reflect the original role the place played in supporting the community.
The building sits in a central location and is easy to reach on foot, with a clear entrance and good signage. The social services inside operate during weekday business hours and can assist visitors with various needs.
The building operated as a hospital for more than a century before closing in 1995, making it a familiar place for multiple generations of Turku families. Its transformation into social service offices preserved its connection to caring for people in the community.
