Joensuu City Library, Public library in Joensuu, Finland.
Joensuu City Library is a modern concrete structure with soapstone cladding and metal grid screens on sun-facing walls. The building features a high-ceilinged interior with an open layout that organizes circulation and seating areas beneath its expansive roof.
The building resulted from an architectural competition held in 1981, with the design completed by architects Tuomo Siitonen and Tuomas Wichmann and finished in 1992. This project reflected 1990s thinking about public institutions and their role in urban centers.
The library serves as a community gathering place within a regional network, housing diverse materials for all age groups. Visitors find books, films, games, and periodicals arranged to welcome both adults and children.
The facility opens early each morning at 7 AM and closes at 9 PM daily, with visitors needing a library card to enter. Planning ahead helps since certain areas or services may have different hours or require advance arrangement.
The building houses a karaoke room and recording studio alongside traditional reading areas, setting it apart from conventional libraries. An oasis space featuring artwork and water features in the main lending hall adds an unexpected dimension to the visitor experience.
