Joensuu Town Hall, Public building with theatre in Joensuu, Finland
Joensuu Town Hall is a brick building standing along Rantakatu street near the Pielisjoki river, decorated with statues by Johannes Haapasalo on its facades. Under one roof, it contains administrative offices, a theater space, and a restaurant.
Architect Eliel Saarinen designed this municipal building, which opened to the public on November 14, 1914. This new structure marked the beginning of a new era for the city's development.
The building houses the easternmost professional theater in the European Union, offering regular performances. The restaurant terrace serves as a gathering place where locals and visitors meet, especially during the jazz and club events held throughout the year.
The building is fully accessible for people with mobility needs and features a clear layout separating administrative and cultural areas. Visitors can explore the spaces flexibly to enjoy theater, restaurant, or public areas depending on their interests.
A fire in March 1966 started in the theater area and caused damage to the upper floors through flames and water from firefighting efforts. The subsequent renovations significantly improved the ventilation systems throughout the building.
