Botanical Garden Botania, Botanical garden and tropical butterfly house in Joensuu, Finland
Botania is a botanical garden spread over 4 hectares in Joensuu with glasshouses containing tropical plants and butterflies. The site includes both indoor climate-controlled areas and outdoor spaces with native plants and walking paths.
The site was established in 1955 as a research garden for the University of Eastern Finland, initially serving scientific purposes. Over time it opened to the public and became an important educational and recreation facility in the region.
The garden displays plants from different climate zones and houses tropical butterflies that visitors can observe up close. The collection connects scientific work with an experience that brings people closer to the diversity of nature.
Access is managed through a card system that includes entry to tropical indoor areas and outdoor spaces throughout the year. Walking paths make it easy to explore both parts of the garden in any season.
The garden maintains a large collection of over 1,500 plant species, including rare and endangered varieties from around the world. This diversity makes it an important hub for conservation and education in northern Finland.
