Plomb du Cantal, Volcanic summit in Massif Central, France
Plomb du Cantal is a mountain peak in the Massif Central that rises to 1,855 meters (6,086 feet) above sea level. The summit consists of dark basalt rock and forms the highest point of the Monts du Cantal range.
The peak formed through ancient volcanic eruptions that shaped the surrounding landscape millions of years ago. Today the rock layers visible on its slopes show evidence of that dramatic geological past.
Throughout generations, residents of the Cantal region maintained agricultural traditions around the mountain slopes, particularly through seasonal livestock grazing patterns.
You can reach the summit by cable car from the Super Lioran ski resort or by walking one of several hiking trails. Bring sturdy footwear and be prepared for changing weather conditions at this elevation.
The mountain has long attracted paragliders and hang gliders who ride the strong air currents around the peak. These flying activities make it a popular launch point for those seeking aerial adventures.
