Île Sainte-Marguerite

Île Sainte-Marguerite is a Mediterranean island off the coast of Cannes that spans several kilometers and features dense pine forests alongside rocky shores. The landscape is marked by hidden coves and beaches, while Fort Royal stands prominently on the island.

Fort Royal was constructed in the 17th century and served as the prison of the mysterious Man in the Iron Mask from 1687 to 1698. This event made the location a significant point in French history.

The fort houses a maritime museum where you can learn about ships and seafaring traditions of this region. The exhibits show how important the sea has been to people living along this coast.

Ferries connect the island regularly with the mainland, departing from the harbor in Cannes with a crossing time of about 15 minutes. It is advisable to wear comfortable shoes, as the paths on the island are uneven and sometimes steep.

Part of the island is protected as a biological reserve and serves as a nesting ground for rare bird species. This protected area reveals the natural side of the place, away from tourist paths.
