Cannes

Cannes is a city on the Mediterranean coast in the Alpes-Maritimes department, known for sandy beaches, palm-lined promenades, and upscale dining. The shoreline extends from the old town of Le Suquet in the west to the harbor district in the east, with public bathing areas interspersed among private beach clubs.

In the 11th century, a fortified settlement emerged on the hill, later becoming the old town of Le Suquet. From the 19th century onward, English and Russian aristocrats discovered the area as a winter retreat, prompting the construction of the first hotels along the shore.

The city blends French Riviera elegance with a year-round film culture visible in cafés, boutiques, and street-level displays honoring cinema history. Locals shop for fresh produce in the old covered market and share the public beaches with visitors, creating a relaxed yet sophisticated atmosphere.

The old town of Le Suquet is best explored on foot, while the coastal promenade remains flat and suitable for walking or cycling. Public beaches provide free access to the water, whereas private sections offer lounge chairs and service for a fee.

The Île Sainte-Marguerite just offshore holds an old fort where the famous Man in the Iron Mask was imprisoned in the 17th century. Visitors can take a ferry to the island and walk through eucalyptus forests covering much of the land.
