Croix des gardes, Nature reserve in Cannes, France.
The 80-hectare forest reserve contains Mediterranean vegetation, including umbrella pines and forty varieties of mimosa trees spread across multiple walking paths.
The site received its name in 1525 when King Francis I established a Swiss guard garrison to monitor potential pirate activities along the coastline.
A polished steel cross, created by artist Jean-Yves Lechevallier in 1990, stands at the summit to commemorate a guard killed at this location.
The park features 20 kilometers of marked trails, six observation points, and a 3-kilometer fitness circuit accessible through the Avenue de la Croix-des-Gardes entrance.
Three resident donkeys maintain the grounds while municipal horses from the park's equestrian police station regularly patrol the upper sections.
