Ancien funiculaire de Super-Cannes, Historic funicular track in California district, Cannes, France.
The Ancien funiculaire de Super-Cannes is a historic cable-powered railway system built between 1925 and 1928 that stretched roughly 850 meters from downtown Cannes up to the Super-Cannes Observatory. The installation featured a sophisticated mechanical system with stations at both ends and was constructed according to Italian designs by local workshops.
The system was built by Dyle and Bacalan workshops following Italian designs by Ceretti and Tanfani between 1925 and 1928, and operated until 1966 when it finally stopped service. This closure ended a key transport connection that had served the hillside community for nearly four decades.
The lower station building displays neo-Provençal architecture resembling a rural chapel, with interior decorations that reflect regional artistic traditions. This architectural choice shaped how locals and visitors experienced the connection between the seaside town and the hillside above.
Today visitors can walk the path that follows the old rail line, which offers a hiking route with moderate elevation and is accessible from nearby parking areas. The trail winds through wooded sections of the hillside, allowing you to discover the historical remains along the way.
You can still find old railway tracks and steel cables from the 1920s along the route, now covered by vegetation growing around them. These remnants reveal how solidly the original structure was built to handle the demands of daily service.
