Maison du Perron

Maison du Perron is a four-story house on rue des Changes marked by a distinctive double-leaf porch entrance. The building displays typical medieval construction features with timber framing and hand-crafted structural elements throughout its design.

The building was constructed around 1270, a date confirmed through timber frame analysis of its wooden skeleton. It ranks among the oldest houses in Chartres and has survived multiple centuries while maintaining its fundamental structure.

The house served as a gathering place for citizens to conduct public affairs and community business over many centuries. Locals knew it by different names including "Parloir aux Bourgeois", reflecting its importance in civic life.

The house is visible from the street and accessible as part of Chartres' urban landscape. The best way to experience it is by walking through the historic city center along rue des Changes.

Original medieval nails and timber pieces from the construction remain preserved inside the building. These materials provide a rare direct look at the craftsmanship that shaped Chartres in the 13th century.
