Hôtel Alfred Sommier, hotel in Paris, France
Hôtel Alfred Sommier is a 19th-century luxury mansion near Place de la Madeleine in Paris's 8th arrondissement. The building features two connected houses organized around an inner courtyard and garden with classical Haussmannian design, decorated stone details, and large windows throughout.
Construction began in 1858 under architect Joseph-Michel Le Soufaché and finished in 1860. The building replaced an earlier hotel called Soubise that had stood on the site since the 1780s and became the residence of the wealthy Sommier family, prominent in the sugar trade.
The building takes its name from Alfred Sommier, a sugar trader who made his home here starting in 1860. The rooms still display furniture and artworks from different periods, reflecting the refined taste of the family who built and lived in this house.
The hotel sits just off Place de la Madeleine and is easily reached from Madeleine metro station. The location offers quiet access through a private courtyard, creating a peaceful feel even though you are in the heart of busy Paris.
Alfred Sommier purchased the Vaux-le-Vicomte castle in 1875 and undertook a complete restoration, now considered one of France's finest private castles. This remarkable undertaking shows the house's original owner was not only a businessman but also a generous patron of the arts.
