Kotli, Hamlet in the municipality of Buzet, Croatia

Kotli is a hamlet in the municipality of Buzet in the Istrian region of Croatia. It sits along the Mirna River, whose flowing water has carved pale, bowl-shaped hollows into the limestone rocks over time.

The name Kotli comes from the Croatian word for the natural bowl-shaped hollows carved into the rock by water. In the early 20th century the settlement had over a hundred inhabitants, but the population shrank steadily until 2021, when the village was officially dissolved and merged with nearby Hum.

In Kotli, a small tavern opens during the warmer months with a terrace overlooking the water and pale rock formations. The hamlet also sits along a walking route that passes seven waterfalls, drawing hikers through the village throughout the season.

The hamlet is reached by a narrow road suitable for cars and sits close to the walking paths along the Mirna River. A visit pairs well with a stop in Hum or Buzet, both of which are nearby and easy to reach on the same trip.

Two old watermills once used the river current to grind grain, and one of them has been partly restored and can be seen today. The pale rock formations carved by the water are said by locals to resemble Turkish water sources, a comparison that has long shaped how people describe this spot.
