Paz

Paz is a small settlement in northeastern Istria that sits on a plateau at roughly 300 meters elevation. The village today numbers around 60 residents and is marked by the ruins of an old castle that once dominated the area.

The fortress was founded in the late 13th century by Friedrich Eberstein, who received it from the Patriarch of Aquileia. The settlement later grew around this fortified structure.

The parish church dedicated to the Assumption dominates the religious character of this place from the 15th century onward. The village cemetery church of St. Vid reflects the same era and remains central to local identity.

This place is small and easy to navigate, so everything can be explored on foot. The best starting point is the parking area near the castle ruins, from which the churches and remains are accessible.

The castle ruins follow an unusual trapezoidal layout perched on a narrow plateau that marks the edge of today's village. This distinctive shape was dictated by the terrain itself.
