Šušnjevica

Šušnjevica is a settlement in the Arsa River valley in eastern Istria, situated within a hilly forested landscape. The location spans across rural terrain at around 48 meters elevation and features agricultural areas interspersed with forest paths.

The settlement emerged as an administrative district under Austro-Hungarian rule and later became the capital of Valdarsa municipality when Italy took control after World War I. This political shift between 1922 and 1947 shaped its local development.

The community preserves traces of Istrorumeni heritage through its historical role as a center for this language group. Visitors can still see signs of this cultural past in the local buildings and place names today.

The settlement is best explored on foot using forest paths and rural trails that wind through the surrounding landscape. It is advisable to visit during drier weather conditions to safely navigate these walking routes.

After World War II the place experienced a dramatic population decline as most residents left when the area came under Yugoslav control. Today abandoned houses stand as reminders of a once-thriving community and its sudden transformation.
