Faizpur, town
Faizpur is a small town in Jalgaon district in the state of Maharashtra, India, enclosed by an old mud wall with several large gateways leading into the center. Inside, tightly packed houses with tiled roofs line narrow, winding streets that give the town its dense, compact character.
In December 1936, Faizpur hosted the fiftieth session of the Indian National Congress, the first time this gathering was held in a rural setting, drawing large numbers of farmers and villagers. The session helped shift the independence movement's focus toward rural communities and their concerns.
Faizpur has long been home to wool weaving, and the craft is still practiced by many families who produce cloth using deep blue and red dyes made locally. Visitors walking through the narrow streets may notice small workshops where looms are still in use.
The months between November and February offer the most comfortable weather for a visit, as the heat is much lower than in other seasons. Simple guesthouses are available for those who want to stay overnight, but larger hotel facilities are not found here.
Faizpur was once a key trading point for the Khandesh cotton variety, a type of fiber grown in this region and sought by merchants from far away. Some of the older courtyards and merchant buildings in town are quiet reminders of that trading past.
