Azad Kuh, Mountain summit in Mazandaran Province, Iran
Azad Kuh is a mountain in the Alborz range with a summit reaching 4,355 meters and steep rock walls on its eastern, northern, and western sides. The peak is distinguished by two prominent spires that sit side by side at the top.
The region around this summit was historically focused on coal mining before shifting toward recreation in the mid-1900s. The proximity to Tehran made the Alborz mountains an accessible destination for mountain activities.
The name Azad Kuh comes from Persian words meaning free mountain, reflecting how locals view this isolated peak rising above the surrounding valleys. Visitors notice this significance in how the mountain stands apart from neighboring peaks in everyday conversation and local culture.
The climb starts from Kalak Bala village and crosses meadows to reach Chooren Pass at 3,800 meters. The final ascent to the twin peaks involves scrambling over rocks and navigating exposure on steep terrain.
On clear days, climbers from the eastern spire can see Mount Damavand and other distant peaks across the Central Alborz. These sweeping views are among the most rewarding vistas from this elevation.
