Abetone, Mountain municipality in Province of Pistoia, Italy
Abetone is a mountain settlement in the Province of Pistoia, located at 1,388 meters elevation in the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines. Dense fir forests surround the village, which now forms part of the municipality of Abetone Cutigliano and draws winter sports visitors year after year.
The settlement began in 1732 as a customs post between the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and the Duchy of Modena at a newly opened mountain pass. The road connection over the pass encouraged trade and made the area accessible to travelers.
The Orto Botanico Forestale dell'Abetone botanical garden displays native plant species from the Apennine mountain ecosystem. Visitors can walk through and learn about the alpine flora that thrives in this high-altitude environment.
The village sits on the border between Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna and offers several ski facilities for winter sports. Since 2017, it has been part of the larger municipality of Abetone Cutigliano and shares administration with neighboring hamlets.
The name comes from a large fir tree that workers cut down during the construction of the pass road in the 18th century. That tree stood exactly where the main square later developed.
