Riserva naturale Abetone

The Abetone Natural Reserve spans 584 hectares in Tuscany's Pistoia province, featuring forests, meadows, and alpine environments at altitudes between 1060 and 1560 meters.

After Tuscany joined the Kingdom of Italy in 1860, the Abetone forest came under State Forest Corps management, leading to improved forest preservation methods.

The reserve maintains educational trails and research facilities where scientists study local ecosystems, contributing to environmental education and scientific understanding.

Visitors need authorization from Pistoia Biodiversity Carabinieri Department for organized excursions, submitted at least 15 days before the planned activity.

The reserve contains ancient silver fir installations, with pollen fossils indicating their widespread presence 6000 years ago before beech trees became dominant.
