Magliano in Toscana is a small commune in the Province of Grosseto surrounded by medieval walls and towers. Magliano developed from the ancient Etruscan settlement of Heba and maintained its importance through Roman times. The Aldobrandeschi family built the walls and towers around 1000, which were later reinforced by Siena before the Medici took control in the 1500s and the area eventually became part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.
Magliano has carried its current name since 1097, when it first appeared in a written contract. The narrow streets and small squares reveal how communities here lived and organized themselves over generations, with coats of arms carved into buildings preserving the stories of noble families.
The village sits roughly 20 kilometers from the coast and works well as a base for exploring the Maremma region. Walking through narrow streets requires sturdy footwear due to uneven cobblestones, and climbing to the walls offers better views of the surrounding landscape than staying below.
