Province of Grosseto
Province of Grosseto, Province in Tuscany, Italy
Province of Grosseto is an administrative region in southern Tuscany featuring mountains, coastal plains, and access to the Tyrrhenian Sea. The territory encompasses around 28 municipalities connected by a network of provincial roads and includes diverse landscapes from forests to marshlands.
The region developed from medieval settlements, with the Aldobrandeschi family building numerous castles and fortified towns in the 12th century. These fortifications shaped the territory's character and remain visible throughout the province today.
The province contains Etruscan ruins scattered across its villages and Maremma region, which remain visible in museums and archaeological sites. Local festivals throughout the year celebrate the production of wine, olive oil, and chestnuts with traditional food and community gatherings.
The Via Aurelia highway connects the province directly to Rome in the south and Livorno in the north, making travel to major cities straightforward. A local road network links the municipalities, so exploring by car is practical and manageable.
The Maremma Natural Park protects about 9,800 hectares of Mediterranean landscape with beaches, pine forests, and wetlands. The area is home to wild horses that roam freely through these natural surroundings.
