Capalbio, Municipality in southern Tuscany, Italy
Capalbio is a municipality in southern Tuscany at 217 meters elevation with medieval walls and a compact town of reddish roofs. The Tyrrhenian Sea coast lies roughly 15 kilometers west with sandy stretches between low dunes.
The settlement passed from Charlemagne to the Abbey of Tre Fontane in 805 before falling under control of the Aldobrandeschi family. Later, the Republic of Siena governed the area and reshaped the fortifications several times.
The town center spreads across a hilltop with narrow lanes between medieval buildings made of yellowish stone. On weekends, locals gather in Piazza Magenta and along Via Vittorio Emanuele for shopping and coffee.
The town center is best explored on foot, as the lanes are narrow and steep. The beaches are accessible by car from the Aurelia road through signposted access points.
The Lake Burano nature reserve borders the coast with a brackish lake behind sand dunes and the 17th-century Buranaccio Tower. Flamingos and other migratory birds use the area as a resting spot during winter months.
