Rocca aldobrandesca

The Rocca Aldobrandesca is a medieval fortress positioned at the highest point of Capalbio's historic center, consisting of a quadrangular tower and the adjoining Palazzo Collacchioni. The complex contains period rooms with original furnishings, a historic piano, and a terrace offering panoramic views across the surrounding landscape and seacoast.

The fortress emerged in medieval times and became identified with the Aldobrandeschi family in the 13th century, from whom it takes its name. In the 15th century it fell under Sienese control, a change that shaped its governance structure for centuries to follow.

The palace within the fortress displays furnishings from different periods and preserves a Conrad Graf piano that composer Giacomo Puccini played during his time in the area. These objects show how the place served as a cultural gathering spot for artists and wealthy families over many generations.

The fortress is reachable on foot from the village center and offers the best views when weather is clear, allowing the terrace to reveal distant horizons. Guided tours are available, and visitor information can be obtained at the reception area located on the ground floor of the complex.

The terrace features a crenellated parapet that frames views extending across Tuscan hills toward the Mediterranean coast. This panoramic sweep was strategically important for medieval defense and remains one of the most memorable vistas in the region today.
