Torre di Buranaccio, Coastal defense tower in Capalbio, Italy.

Torre di Buranaccio is a three-story stone tower with a square footprint situated near Lake Burano, featuring thick walls of about three meters and its original architectural details intact. The structure includes a water cistern in the lower level and supports a viewing terrace with broad corbels.

Built in 1563 under Cosimo I de Medici, the tower marked the southern border between the State of the Presidi and the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. This position made it a crucial frontier point between competing powers in the Mediterranean region.

The tower served as a lookout point in a coastal warning network where guards communicated dangers to neighboring settlements through smoke and fire signals. This signaling system was essential for alerting communities to sea-based threats along the shore.

You reach the upper levels of this tower through an external staircase positioned five meters above ground, leading to an observation platform with lake views. Wear sturdy shoes and check the weather before climbing, as the structure is fully exposed to the elements.

The structure houses a water cistern in its lower section, allowing occupants to maintain supplies without leaving the safety of the fortification. This feature was essential for sustaining the garrison during extended periods of isolation or threat.
