Vulci, Archaeological site in Montalto di Castro, Italy

Vulci is an ancient Etruscan city whose ruins spread across a large area along the Fiora River, showing remains of structures, temples, burial chambers, and a Roman bridge. The site reveals how the settlement was organized and how people lived here over centuries.

The city began as an Etruscan settlement and grew into a powerful trading center in ancient times, maintaining connections across the Mediterranean. After Roman conquest, it gradually declined and was eventually left empty.

The François Tomb displays detailed painted walls showing stories from Etruscan and Greek mythology, revealing the artistic skill of the ancient people who lived here. These images tell us about their beliefs and how they saw the world.

The site is spread out and is best explored on foot, with several marked paths leading to the main ruins. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and bring sun protection, as there is little shade and some paths cross rough ground.

A notable burial mound from Etruscan times rises prominently from the flat landscape and served as a landmark for travelers across generations. Its size and condition offer rare insight into how the Etruscans honored their dead.
