Montalto di Castro, Coastal municipality in Province of Viterbo, Italy
Montalto di Castro is a municipality along the Mediterranean coast in the Province of Viterbo with a medieval center surrounded by defensive walls. A 15th-century castle crowns the elevated terrain and offers views across the coastline and the surrounding countryside.
The settlement emerged during the 9th century and was first documented in papal records. In the 16th century it came under the Duchy of Castro, remaining so until 1649 when it was reincorporated into the Papal State.
The Santa Maria Assunta Church displays a blend of Romanesque and Renaissance elements across its facade. Walking through, visitors can observe how different building periods shaped the appearance of this place of worship over the centuries.
The area connects to Rome via the E80 motorway and has regular train services to larger cities. Visitors will find lodging options along the coast and can easily access the extended beaches.
The area houses two contrasting energy installations: one of Italy's largest solar facilities and also a major thermal power plant. This coexistence demonstrates different approaches to electricity generation at the same location.
