Castello dell'Abbadia, Medieval castle in Canino, Italy.
Castello dell'Abbadia is a medieval fortress in Canino positioned high above the Fiora River's bank. The building features four semi-elliptical towers and defensive walls and now serves as home to an archaeological museum.
The original site was a Benedictine abbey from the 9th century before being developed into a fortress in the 15th century. From 1430 it served the Farnese family as a feudal possession and strategic outpost.
The castle houses an archaeological museum displaying Etruscan artifacts and objects from nearby burial sites. The site blends medieval architecture with the memory of ancient civilizations that existed here long before the fortress.
Visitors can explore the grounds and view both the medieval structures and archaeological collections. The location perched above the river also provides views across the surrounding landscape.
Near the castle stands an ancient Etruscan-Roman stone bridge spanning about 30 meters across the Fiora River, known locally as the Devil's Bridge. This bridge shows the engineering skill of antiquity and was long protected by the fortress.
