François Tomb, Etruscan tomb in Vulci Archaeological Park, Italy

The François Tomb is an underground burial chamber with multiple rooms connected by corridors and covered with detailed wall paintings. The frescoes depict mythological and historical scenes carved directly into the rock.

An Italian archaeologist discovered this burial site in 1857 and found artwork from the 4th century BCE showing how Etruscans buried their dead with honor. The discovery helped scholars learn about the techniques and practices of this ancient civilization.

The painted walls show scenes from Greek mythology and Etruscan history, including the sacrifice of Trojan prisoners and the rescue of an Etruscan leader. These images reveal what mattered to the people who created them.

Access to the tomb requires a guided tour that must be reserved in advance at the park visitor center. It is helpful to wear comfortable shoes because the path involves stairs and narrow passages leading to the underground chambers.

The tomb contains a rare painted portrait of an Etruscan nobleman dressed in red who watches his servant release a bird. This detail shows personal moments from the daily life of the ancient upper class.
