Punta Campanella Marine Reserve, Marine protected area in Campania, Italy
Punta Campanella Marine Reserve stretches along the coast between Naples and Salerno, protecting a seascape filled with rocky outcrops, underwater life, and coastal cliffs. The protected area encompasses ten key zones from Capo di Sorrento to Positano, each offering distinct marine and coastal landscapes.
The reserve was established in 1997 and officially recognized in 2004 to protect the marine coast and its resources. The area had seen human settlements along its shores since the 8th century BC, making it a region with deep historical roots.
The reserve brings together six municipalities of the Sorrento Peninsula, where fishing communities practice methods passed down through generations. Visitors can observe how locals maintain a connection between their traditions and the need to protect the marine environment.
Visitors can join guided boat tours aboard a vessel that stops at various anchoring points and offers swimming breaks along the route. It is helpful to bring swimwear and plan alternate dates in case of rough seas or stormy weather.
Beneath the surface at Vervece Rock sits an underwater statue of Madonna at approximately 40 feet (12 meters) depth, visited by divers year-round. This submerged shrine is a distinctive place of spiritual reflection accessible only from the sea.
