Church of Saint Peter a Grado

Church of Saint Peter a Grado is a Romanesque basilica with three aisles supported by ancient columns. The exterior walls feature Islamic ceramic basins, while the interior displays a complex arrangement of multiple apses.

Over early Christian buildings and Roman structures, a larger church developed during the 8th or 9th century. This layering shows how religious buildings accumulated at this place across different periods.

The interior walls display 14th-century frescoes by Deodato Orlandi showing papal figures and biblical scenes. These paintings tell the story of the place's connection to the history of the papacy.

The building sits west of Pisa and opens daily to visitors with no admission fee. The location allows a peaceful visit away from the city center with time to explore the surroundings.

The floor plan is unusual with three apses on the east side and a fourth on the west. The western apse marks the tradition that Saint Peter celebrated his first mass here.
