Fortezza da Basso, Renaissance fort in Florence, Italy
Fortezza da Basso is a Renaissance fort in Florence within the old city walls, built from red brick with thick defensive walls and a large inner courtyard. The compound spreads across an extended area near the main railway station and includes several buildings along with wide outdoor spaces used for events.
Alessandro de Medici ordered the construction between 1534 and 1537 to secure Florence militarily after his return to power. Pier Francesco da Viterbo designed the structure following the latest defense principles of that era with star-shaped bastions.
The structure now serves as a major exhibition venue and hosts international trade shows along with the well-known Pitti Immagine fashion events throughout the year. Visitors experience here the connection between historic military architecture and contemporary business activity at one of Tuscany's most important event spaces.
The fort sits near Santa Maria Novella railway station and is easily reached on foot or by public transport. Access varies depending on events taking place, with different entrances used, and the outdoor areas offer clear orientation through their geometric layout.
The name da Basso, meaning lower fort, refers to the unusual placement in the flat part of Florence rather than on a hill. This decision went against common military practice of the time but offered better control over the northern approaches to the city.
