Marina di Ragusa, human settlement in Province of Ragusa, Sicily, Italy
Marina di Ragusa is a seaside town on Sicily's southern coast with a wide sandy beach and a modern marina holding around 700 boats. A long waterfront promenade runs parallel to the beach and is lined with palm trees, while the central square Piazza Duca degli Abruzzi serves as a gathering place for markets and events.
The place started as a small fishing village that later developed into a seaside resort, while the nearby Irminio river mouth once held ancient Greek settlements. A tower from the 1500s, Torre Cabrera, was built to defend against raids and still stands as a reminder of that period.
Marina di Ragusa takes its name from the sheltered bay and port that have shaped the place for centuries. The town is marked today by a rhythm of beach life and local traditions, especially during summer celebrations like the Feast of Santa Maria di Portosalvo, when processions with boats move along the coast.
The place is easily reached by car, about 12 miles (20 kilometers) from Ragusa, or by bus from the nearest train station in Ragusa. The wide sandy beach has lifeguards during the peak season and shallow water that is safe for families and accessible from the promenade.
The place is known as a filming location for the Italian television series 'Inspector Montalbano,' particularly nearby Punta Secca, which allows visitors to see locations from the show. A special summer festival is 'Palo a Mare,' where participants try to grab a flag from a greasy pole placed on a boat in the sea.
