Punta Penna Lighthouse, Maritime lighthouse in Vasto, Italy
Punta Penna Lighthouse is a 70-meter concrete tower with an octagonal shape and a white exterior topped by a gray metallic lantern dome. The structure rises from a two-story base and dominates the landscape where the town meets the Adriatic coast.
The original structure dating from 1912 was damaged during the German retreat in 1944 and subsequently rebuilt completely. It reopened in 1948 as a new concrete tower.
The lighthouse serves as a landmark that connects the town to its maritime heritage and reminds people of Vasto's relationship with the sea. Its white tower remains visible from the beach and harbor, making it part of the daily visual landscape for residents and visitors.
The lighthouse is located along Via Madonna della Penna near Vasto's harbor and is easy to access by road. A spiral staircase with around 300 steps leads to the top, so visitors should be prepared for a good climb.
The tower stands at about 70 meters, making it one of the tallest lighthouses along the Italian coast. This exceptional height allows it to warn ships from great distances and makes it an unusual example of post-war lighthouse architecture.
